Fight Against Plastic Waste

Amadea is going further in protecting its beloved island from plastic waste. Besides its effort to install complimentary water refill station in every floor which enables guests to refill their water bottle and help reduced the amount of plastic bottle waste, recently on October 16, 2018 Amadea launched GAKK, a new initiative to reduce the usage of single use plastic bag. GAKK is the abbreviation of Gerakan Anti Kantong Kresek (Indonesian) which literally means anti plastic bag movement.

Just recently on October 23, 2019 GAKK team went to an elementary school in the village of Talibeng, Sidemen in Karangasem Regency, eastern part of Bali. They engaged with more than 80 students with a fun filled activities. Thru fun games the kids were taught about waste management and tips of how to reduce plastic waste in their daily life. It was a rewarding moment for the team and the kids knowing that we can do something to help protecting this beautiful islands from plastic waste pollution.

Kaka, one of the GAKK team member said, “I am really grateful that I have this the opportunity to share the knowledge with all the kids here. Knowledge about waste management should be taught since young age as those kids are our future. I am very excited that I can take part in this effort”.

By October 2020 GAKK aims to educate 1000 students about waste management. So far they have reached 130 students from two schools from two different region in Bali.

Things to Do During Rainy Days in Bali

The wet season is now upon us and the annual rains are essential for keeping the island looking green. Bali’s rainfall is tropical, which means that humidity levels are high and the temperature still remains warm. Rain on the island rarely hinders guest activities in areas of tourism and surfing, swimming and shopping can still take place even during a downfall.

The Balinese readily welcome the rain and all that it entails. Farmers enjoy a well-deserved break from working the rice fields and sit back to watch their crops grow. It is a time for the menfolk to gather at their local community hall to play cards over cups of coffee. They also practice their musical abilities on traditional instruments ready for the next ceremonial performance. In homes around the island, the skill of making offerings is passed down from mother to daughter to ensure that religious obligations are fulfilled.  

Young children love to run barefoot in the rain and splash each other by jumping in puddles. Old-fashioned games of tag, hopscotch, marbles and more are still played in rural areas where afternoons are generally spent outside. The wet season in Bali also enables family members to reconnect at home and tell stories based on Hindu mythology. Spirits are always high on the island even when it is raining outdoors.

 

Bali's Cultural Calendar

Bali's cultural calendar is a continuous cycle of ceremonies and rituals associated with the Hindu faith. There are many auspicious occasions including Saraswati Day (Saturday 7th December 2019). This day honours education, knowledge, science, art and all forms of higher learning. Ceremonies will be held at schools and universities around the island whereby students will pray together. It is a time to express gratitude for past achievements and guidance for future academic endeavors.

Pagerwesi is another important religious holiday that involves prayers and offerings we held on Wednesday 11th December 2019. It is essentially a time to contemplate the future and mentally strengthen oneself against unexpected obstacles. Like many Balinese festivities, Pagerwesi also celebrates the universal battle between good and evil.

Island Inspired Christmas Activities

The best part about spending the festive season on the island of Bali with family and friends is that you are not bound by tradition. There are no rules or regulations and you are free to do exactly as you please. As Bali is a predominantly Hindu enclave, most tourism related ventures remain open on Christmas Day. You can do anything from indulging in a relaxing spa treatment to navigating the white water rapids of the Ayung River or cycling through Bali's rural villages.  

One of the more culturally inspiring activities that you can enjoy as a family on Christmas Day is partaking in a purification ritual in the holy waters of Tirta Empul Temple at Tampaksiring. This spiritually-charged location features a bathing pond fed by a series of fountains where the Balinese come to cleanse body, mind and spirit. An excursion to this site can be combined with lunch in a rice terrace setting at Bebek Tepi Sawah, a popular Ubud restaurant specializing in crispy fried duck.

 

Another great pastime is a Balinese cooking class where you will learn the secrets of local cuisine and get to take home news skills including how to prepare authentic nasi goreng. Alternatively, you might like to escape the heat and head to the cool hills of Bedugul where Bali Treetop Adventure Park has a series of zipline circuits and promises hours of family fun.
