Bali's Cultural Calendar: Bali Kite Festival

16 July 2026

Some things have to be seen to be believed. The Bali Kite Festival is one of them.

Every July to August, the skies above Padang Galak Beach and Mertasari Beach in Sanur fill with something that defies expectation giant traditional kites, some stretching several meters across, climbing high above the coast in an explosion of color, movement, and sound. Teams from local villages and international participants compete not just for prizes, but for pride, each kite a collective effort of craft, skill, and weeks of preparation.

Standing on the beach and looking up is an experience that's genuinely hard to describe. The scale of the kites against the open Bali sky, the hypnotic pull of gamelan music rising from the ground below, the crowd around you drawn from across the island and around the world it lands somewhere between a sporting event, a religious ceremony, and a work of art.

And that's precisely what it is. Rooted in Balinese Hindu tradition, the festival is an offering to the gods a collective prayer for abundant harvests, prosperity, and harmony. The kites are not decoration. They carry meaning.
