Things to Do During Rainy Days in Bali

The wet season is now upon us and the annual rains are essential for keeping the island looking green. Bali’s rainfall is tropical, which means that humidity levels are high and the temperature still remains warm. Rain on the island rarely hinders guest activities in areas of tourism and surfing, swimming and shopping can still take place even during a downfall.

The Balinese readily welcome the rain and all that it entails. Farmers enjoy a well-deserved break from working the rice fields and sit back to watch their crops grow. It is a time for the menfolk to gather at their local community hall to play cards over cups of coffee. They also practice their musical abilities on traditional instruments ready for the next ceremonial performance. In homes around the island, the skill of making offerings is passed down from mother to daughter to ensure that religious obligations are fulfilled.

Young children love to run barefoot in the rain and splash each other by jumping in puddles. Old-fashioned games of tag, hopscotch, marbles and more are still played in rural areas where afternoons are generally spent outside. The wet season in Bali also enables family members to reconnect at home and tell stories based on Hindu mythology. Spirits are always high on the island even when it is raining outdoors

We Care We Share

On Friday, November 23, 2018 we visited the Smile House in Denpasar to see two lovely kids who have undergone cleft patio operation, Aditya Rifky, 8 months old boy from Karangasem Regency and Ni Ketut Sumartini, 3 months old little girl from Buleleng Regency. Both of them are from under privilege family, with generous support from our guest and staff Amadea Cares was able to support the funding for those two kids.

Amadea Cares is Corporate Social Responsibility program that focuses on giving back to the local community. To date we have helped 24 medical operations for 21 kids from Bali and islands beyond.

It was indeed an emotional encounter and we were happy to see smiley face of them and their parents.

Bali’s Cultural Calendar

Tumpek Wariga – Honoring Trees

Bali’s cultural calendar is a continuous cycle of ceremonies and rituals conducted to maintain balance between the realms of the physical, spiritual and unseen worlds. Tumpek Wariga is just one of many auspicious days celebrated on the island and it will fall on 1st December  2018 to honour local trees, especially the humble coconut palm. This versatile palm, alongside rice and bamboo, is considered one of the main pillars to sustain Balinese society. Every single part of the coconut palm has a use including the leaves, nuts, trunk and roots. On this day, local landowners will wrap their coconut palms in lengths of cloth and perform a small ritual by praying for healthy growth and an abundance of fruit.

Galungan Day – Victory of Dharma against Adharma

Bali’s religious calendar is based on a 210 day cycle that is enriched with auspicious dates and colourful rituals. Over the coming month the island’s Hindu community will celebrate Galungan on 26th December 2018, which marks the beginning of a 10 day ceremonial festival. Galungan is a time when the Balinese return home to their ancestral villages to pray in their family temples. It also involves elaborate offerings to appease the Gods as well as the unseen elements of the underworld.

Island Inspired Christmas Activities

The best part about spending the festive season on the island of Bali with family and friends is that you are not bound by tradition. There are no rules or regulations and you are free to do exactly as you please. As Bali is a predominantly Hindu enclave, most tourism related ventures remain open on Christmas Day. You can do anything from indulging in a relaxing spa treatment to navigating the white water rapids of the Ayung River or cycling through Bali's rural villages.

One of the more culturally inspiring activities that you can enjoy as a family on Christmas Day is partaking in a purification ritual in the holy waters of Tirta Empul Temple at Tampaksiring. This spiritually-charged location features a bathing pond fed by a series of fountains where the Balinese come to cleanse body, mind and spirit. An excursion to this site can be combined with lunch in a rice terrace setting at Bebek Tepi Sawah, a popular Ubud restaurant specializing in crispy fried duck.

Another great pastime is a Balinese cooking class where you will learn the secrets of local cuisine and get to take home news skills including how to prepare authentic nasi goreng. Alternatively, you might like to escape the heat and head to the cool hills of Bedugul where Bali Treetop Adventure Park has a series of zipline circuits and promises hours of family fun. Whatever you choose to do on Christmas Day, don’t forget to check in with our Guest Service Assistant to help you create the perfect holiday itinerary.

Plastic Bag No More

Besides its effort to install complimentary water refill station in every floor which enables guests to refill their water bottle and help reduced the amount of plastic bottle waste, recently on October 26, 2018 Amadea launched GAKK, a new initiative to reduce the usage of single use plastic bag. GAKK is the abbreviation of Gerakan Anti Kantong Kresek (Indonesian) which literally means anti plastic bag movement.

A small gathering was held participated by all staff to sign the commitment to stop using plastic bag whenever possible. In cooperation with TRI Upcycle (www.triupcycle.com), Amadea upcycled their old bed sheet and transformed them into a trendy shopping bag which then distributed to all staff. Staffs are encouraged to use the shopping bag at home and start refusing plastic bag when shopping.

“It takes nearly hundred years for a plastic bag to biodegrade. We need to do something now. One of the simplest thing to start with is to stop using single use plastic bag”, says Indra Saputra, Human Resources Coordinator of Amadea Resort & Villas during the gathering.

The main aim of this initiative is to educate staff to start doing something the preserve the environment and hopefully later will encourage their family and friends to join the movement.
