The best part of a week in Seminyak isn't the nightlife. It's that you're only ever minutes from your own room.

Most people get one shot at Seminyak: three venues before midnight, almost none of it remembered. Stay a week and the question becomes a far better one where are we going after dinner tonight?

Start with Red Carpet. The softest possible landing: bellhops at the door, canapés arriving unasked, and a room where you can still hear the person across the table. You'll have a glass of champagne you hadn't planned on, and whenever you're done, Amadea is a walk away.

Then KU DE TA, once everyone else has gone. This is the one that started it all: when it opened in 2000, nobody in Bali had built a beach club, and everything since has borrowed from it. Its White Party still draws the island's most glamorous crowd, and its private loft has long been where guests who'd rather not be noticed enjoy themselves quietly. Skip the sunset scramble, arrive at nine, and you get ocean air, black-clad service and a DJ playing to the room rather than at it.

Motel Mexicola is the best pure fun on the street. Neon, painted tiles, tacos and tequila in a room that looks like a Mexico City fiesta ran through a paint factory. Order a margarita and stay standing: by ten the staff are up on the bar starting the dancing. Nobody here is too cool, and there's no version of this evening where you leave in a bad mood.

The Iron Fairies has a story behind it. One of Seminyak's newer additions begins with Ashley Sutton, who spent years in an iron-ore mine, wrote a children's book about the fairies the miners forged underground, then built the mine and filled it with them. You'll spend the first twenty minutes looking up. Then the live band starts, and it turns from something to see into somewhere to stay.

La Favela is the name everyone already knows. Ask about a night out in Bali and it comes up first, because it doesn't behave like a club. The entrance is deliberately unremarkable, half-hidden behind vines. Inside is a labyrinth built over an old house Brazilian favela meets Indonesian jungle meets flea market, with wooden bridges, ponds and bars throughout. It opens at seven as a restaurant and becomes a dance floor after dinner.

Potato Head deserves a night of its own. It isn't really a venue it's a village of beach club, hotel and restaurants that runs after dark like a cultural programme: a DJ on the lawn one night, live music or an exhibition the next. Underneath sits Klymax, built with DJ Harvey around the sound system rather than the dance floor. Check the schedule first.

Save ShiShi for the night you decide to dress up and stay out. One paragraph cannot do this place justice, so do your own reading online first: there are more reasons it belongs at the end of your week than we have room for here. Techno on one floor, R&B and hip-hop on the next. Dress properly; they do check.

That's the real luxury of a week here: seven completely different ways to end an evening, and the same short journey back to your own bed whenever you want it.
 

Amadea and Yayasan Senyum Bali sponsor an operation for Ida Ayu Adiwina.

Ida Ayu Adiwina had her operation at Ari Canti Hospital in Gianyar this month, sponsored by Amadea in partnership with Yayasan Senyum Bali. Her father, Ida Bagus Wisnu, works as a private employee; her mother runs the household. The surgery their daughter needed had been beyond their reach.

Her name is worth noticing. In Bali, a name announces where a family stands in the traditional social order, and Ida Ayu and Ida Bagus are titles of the Brahmana the highest of the island's four castes, historically its priests and scholars. What a name does not announce is income. Standing and means are two different things here, and the gap between them is where families quietly fall.

"Although Bali gains significant financial benefits from tourism, these benefits are not equally distributed. Many families in rural areas of the island do not experience the same opportunities," says Wayan Warta, General Manager of Amadea Resort and Villas. Hers is the thirtieth operation the programme has funded since it began in February 2012, and the twenty-sixth child it has helped. Sunday afternoon is the one part of the week that should not require a plan. Ours begins at noon by the main pool and runs until four, which is roughly long enough to do nothing properly.

The grill covers both moods. There is the food you eat standing up with a drink in your other hand beef hot dogs, chicken wings, burgers, sandwiches and there is the food worth sitting down for. The beef tenderloin is a reason to arrive hungry. So is the seafood platter: prawns, squid and mahi-mahi with mixed lettuce, sweet corn and a lemon butter sauce you will end up using on everything else on the table.

At two o'clock the Pool Bar joins in. Buy two of the selected cocktails or two Bintang and the third one is ours, right through until four which happens to cover the exact stretch of the afternoon when nobody feels like moving.

That is the whole event. Good food, cold drinks, a pool you are already standing next to, and four hours you do not have to account for to anyone.

Tumpek Kandang, Saturday 5 September

In Balinese Hinduism, the natural world is not a backdrop to human life but a partner in it, and animals are counted among the relationships a person is obliged to maintain. That belief is not left as an idea. It is written into the calendar, and it has a day of its own.
The day is called Tumpek Kandang, and it is dedicated entirely to animals.

Balinese Hindus keep their ritual life on the pawukon, a calendar that runs 210 days rather than 365, which is why Bali's holy days move through the Western year and occur roughly twice within it. Six of these are Tumpek days, each giving thanks for a different part of creation — metal tools, trees, music, shadow puppets. This one gives thanks for animals.

Families prepare offerings, known as banten, and bring them to the animals themselves: cows, pigs, chickens, ducks, dogs, whatever the household keeps. The animals are washed and given holy water, a scattering of rice and a special meal. Prayers are offered to Sang Hyang Rare Angon, the divine cowherd who watches over all living creatures. Cattle receive particular ceremony, dressed in cloth and fitted with woven coconut-leaf ornaments on their horns, a mark of respect for animals that generations of farmers have depended on. Pigs are wrapped with a white cloth around the belly.

The observance is not confined to farming villages. It is kept in family compounds across the island, including those tucked behind the shops and restaurants of Seminyak, where a household dog or a few chickens receive the same attention as a working cow further inland.
Nothing about it is staged for visitors, and there is nothing to buy. Guests who are out early on the fifth may notice small offerings placed beside a pen or a doorway, and families gathered quietly in their courtyards before the day's work begins.

It is worth pausing over. Bali set aside a day for this centuries ago.

A day at Waterbom, a short drive down the coast from Amadea

The Climax works like this. You step into a glass capsule, the door seals behind you, and a voice counts down. Then the floor disappears. Four seconds later you are at the bottom, and the person who spent the whole morning insisting they would not do it is already back in the queue.

That slide is why most people come. It is not why they stay all day.
Waterbom opened in Kuta in December 1993 and has been voted Asia's number one water park nine years running, which is long enough to have worked out what a good day actually looks like. There is a swim-up bar for parents who have earned one. The kids' area has no height minimum, which means the smallest members of the family are not watching from the side.
