Southeast Asia’s leading Festival of words and ideas announces its main program for 2022 – inviting audiences to discover unique voices and exceptional literature from corners both known and unknown, alongside an immersive temple celebration.

Ubud Writers & Readers Festival (UWRF) 2022 lineup offers festival-goers an exciting range of over 50 insightful conversations that explore the power of storytelling and the role of the written word in upholding humanity’s values and freedoms. More than 150 writers and thinkers will converge on Ubud to engage in thought-provoking discussions on the issues that bind us together and, conversely, what pulls us apart.

Unveiling the 19th Festival main program, Festival Founder and Director Janet DeNeefe said: “It is such a joy to return to the Festival’s in-person format in October, bringing Indonesian and International writers together in talks and conversations after the pandemic has kept us separated for so long.”

From 27 to 30 October 2022, literary luminaries and acclaimed social commentators will reflect on this year’s Festival theme ‘Memayu Hayuning Bawana’, an ancient Javanese philosophy, which UWRF translates as ‘Uniting Humanity’, referring to humanity’s capacity to beautify our world and strengthen our ties as a collective.

Red Bag Program to Support Bali Smile Foundation

Amadea Cares is Amadea’s corporate Social Responsibility program that focuses on giving back to the local community was launched on 14th February 2012. Funding to this worthy cause is set aside from the resort’s CSR fund and staff members will contribute directly from their respective salaries. Each in-house guest will also be invited to participate by donating just Rp.5.000 during their stay, which is less than the price of a single drink. All funds raised through Amadea Cares will be distributed to a number of carefully selected organizations requiring support.

The first recipient of a donation from Amadea Cares will be Yayasan Senyum Bali also known as the Bali Smile Foundation. This non-profit charity organization was established in 2005 by Mary Northmore, a Bali resident originally from the UK. It is an independent foundation that brings essential healthcare to local people with severe craniofacial disabilities.

Towel Creation That Makes You Smile

Amadea is a small but service-orientated hotel that always does its very best to stand out from the rest. Guests are often amazed at what they find each day. From a dog wearing reading glasses to a cat or rabbit cuddled up on the pillow, there is no limit to the creativity. Often the Room Attendants get special requests and they have even managed to successfully make a man playing a drum as well as an angry bird. Daily towel art has become a highlight for everyone staying at Amadea and there is always an element of surprise when guests return to see what fun creation is decorating their bed.

Bali's Culture Calendar in October

Almost every month in Bali is filled with special religious days. Here are some that you can observe if you are in Bali in October. Balinese has their unique way of life to balance of all aspect of life with their local wisdom of Tri Hita Karana philosophy.

Tumpek Wayang

An auspicious day coming up on Bali’s cultural calendar is Tumpek Wayang that falls on 1st October 2022. This special occasion pays tribute to the shadow puppets that have both religious and social significance here on the island. A small purification ceremony is performed to bless each puppet, believed to have its own distinct character and possess magical powers that can bring an ordinary performance to life. The puppeteer will also pray during this ritual seeking artistic guidance for future shows.
Puppets, known as ‘wayang kulit’ in Bali, are used to conduct a unique form of theatre employing a transparent screen to project light and shadow. Performances re-enact adaptations of classic Hindu tales or cover local events filled with elements of humour and messages of morality. Puppet shows performed at night are purely for entertainment purposes and during the day they are held in conjunction with more important religious ceremonies. Saraswati Day

Saraswati Day will be celebrated on Saturday 22nd October 2022. This day honours education, knowledge, science, art and all forms of higher learning. Ceremonies will be held at schools and universities around the island whereby students will pray together. It is a time to express gratitude for past achievements and guidance for future academic endeavors.

Pagerwesi Day

Pagerwesi is another important religious holiday that involves prayers and offerings we held on Wednesday 26th October 2022. It is essentially a time to contemplate the future and mentally strengthen oneself against unexpected obstacles. Like many Balinese festivities, Pagerwesi also celebrates the universal battle between good and evil.
