Warm greetings from Bali – the island of the Gods!
It is that time again and we trust that this edition of our online newsletter finds you well. Please read on for all the very latest news, events and special promotions from Amadea Resort & Villas at our prime location on Seminyak’s celebrated ‘Eat Street’.
Although the seasonal rains and gusty sea breezes define this particular time of the year as low season, Bali is still a hive of activity. Many hotels and restaurants are using this quiet period to carry out minor aesthetic refurbishments such as a fresh coat of paint in preparation for busier months ahead.
The island is also buzzing with the promise of several major Hindu holidays coming up on the calendar this March. We will see Bali come to a complete standstill on Nyepi Day where all outside activity is prohibited and even the airport closes. Then there will be the festivities of Galungan Day a little later in the month. Elaborate offerings will be made and every home gets decorated for the occasion with a bamboo pole and woven palm fronds. This certainly is a sight to behold, especially in some of Bali’s more traditional villages.
In this edition we share just what Valentine’s Day really means to us as Amadea Cares, our Corporate Social Responsibility program, celebrates its 1st anniversary. We are delighted to announce that in conjunction with this anniversary, we have financed another craniofacial operation for a little boy from Sumba. The primary aim of Amadea Cares is to give back to those less fortunate in the local community and put smiles back on faces.
We also introduce an exciting new promotion that enables you to stay longer and pay less. We take a look at what Bali Zoo has to offer in terms of exotic animals from around the Indonesian archipelago. There is also news about our latest Employee of the Quarter awards and more.
Happy reading and see you soon in Bali.

Amadea Cares Celebrates 1st Anniversary
Amadea Cares, our very own Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, proudly celebrated its 1st anniversary on Valentine’s Day. Over the past year, the project has actively raised funds to help those less fortunate within the community. As a result Amadea Cares has been able to finance two craniofacial surgeries in partnership with the Bali Smile Foundation.
Amadea Cares chose Valentine’s Day for its launch date back in 2012 as it is a time synonymous with love and commitment. The project is essentially about providing a brighter future for those in need by literally putting a smile back on young faces. Other recent activities have included a visit to a local orphanage over the festive season to play with little ones and distribute goods.
Amadea Cares relies on several funding avenues to keep it operational. Firstly, the resort pledges CSR funding to this worthy cause. Additionally, our staff members personally contribute from their respective salaries. In-house guests are also invited to participate by donating just Rp.5.000 during their stay, which incidentally is less than the price of a single soft drink. Lastly, a collection box is located at the Front Desk whereby visitors are free to lighten their wallets of any loose change.
On this Valentine’s Day, Amadea Cares was able to fully finance surgery for 3 year old Erfan Bulu from the island of Sumba in East Nusa Tenggara. This little boy was born with a sizable tumour between his eyes and his impoverished family have been unable to afford medical treatment. Erfan’s condition was brought to the attention of the Bali Smile Foundation by a charity in Sumba and Amadea Cares was delighted to step in and help. Surgery was a success and now Erfan can grow up just like any other child in his village.
Many thanks go out to all of our guests who have generously contributed to Amadea Cares over the past year and we hope to continue this project well into the future. It is important to remember that - missing out on one drink today could make someone smile forever!

Bali Gets Cultural this March
March will be a busy month for Bali’s Hindu community with several auspicious occasions taking place on the island’s cultural calendar. Nyepi Day or Balinese New Year will be celebrated on 12th March 2013 whereby all activity comes to a complete standstill for 24 hours. The eve of this religious holiday is characterized by a street parade of giant monster effigies to symbolically deter evil spirits from disturbing the peace. What follows is a day of complete silence where the Balinese remain at home to pray, meditate and reflect on the year ahead. Out of respect for Nyepi Day, guests must also remain in the confines of their hotel and are not permitted to go out until the next day.
Galaungan Day falls on 27th March 2013 and this special day is a time to commemorate the victory of righteousness against evil. Most Balinese will return home to their ancestral villages around the island to pray and partake in a number of ceremonial rituals and rites. Elaborate offerings bearing fruit and flowers are prepared to appease the Gods and the spirits of defied ancestors. Every Balinese family will host a final ritual in their ancestral temple on Kuningan Day on 6th April 2013 involving simple offerings and yellow rice.
The month of March provides the ideal opportunity to experience different aspects of Bali’s unique cultural heritage. The island will come alive with colourful decorations adorning the entrance to every home and each temple compound. Apart from Nyepi Day, Bali’s tourism industry will be largely unaffected by these religious holidays. All hotels, restaurants and shopping outlets will remain fully operational unless stated otherwise.
Find out here what is available for you at Amadea if you stay with us during Nyepi day.

Stars of the Quarter
It is often said that that the most important asset of any company is its staff. However, while many business enterprises quote this in theory, very few actually act upon it. At Amadea Villas & Resort, we are proud to say that we really do make every effort to respect, develop and recognize our people. Our team is a group of talented individuals and anyone who shines is duly rewarded.
Ameadea’s recent Staff Gathering took place at our 4-bedroom Villa Ganeca and it was an opportunity for our entire team to discuss work related issues and bond in a social setting. We also had the pleasure to announce our latest round of awards winners for Employee of the Quarter for the October – December 2012 period.
Congratulations were extended to Ms. Yuni Listiari, Reservation Agent as our Employee of the Quarter. Yuni has been with Amadea since the very beginning and the attention to detail that she brings to the office is quite exceptional. She works hard to attend to every single guest request and ensure that all particulars are finalized prior to arrival.
Bell Boy, Arya Sugiantara, really went above and beyond the call of duty this quarter and as a result he earned himself double recognition. Arya was awarded Employee of the Quarter – Best Supporting Partner as well as Most Recommended Employee by Guests. He endears himself to everyone at the resort with his friendly smile and positive work ethic.
Well done Yuni and Arya! Both of you have bright futures with Amadea and we hope that you continue to be role models for all other members of our team.
