We are delighted to present the latest edition of our online newsletter designed to let you know exactly what is going on at Amadea Resort & Villas. From the vibrant playground of Seminyak, we bring you news that will hopefully draw you back to the island of Bali in the near future.
The month of March will be highlighted by Nyepi Day, when the entire island is shrouded in silence for what is considered to be one of the most important events on Bali’s cultural calendar. For the Balinese, it is time for personal reflection and thinking about the year ahead. Visitors are obliged to stay inside the confines of their hotel but they are still able to swim, relax and soak up the sun whilst keeping noise to a minimum.
In this edition, we are delighted to share information that Amadea Cares, our Corporate Social Responsibility program, has funded another two facial surgeries for children in need. This would not have been possible without the generosity of guests and our team who donate a percentage of their monthly salary to this worthy cause.
Happy reading and see you soon in Bali.
The Amadea Resort & Villas Team
A Day of Silence
All forms of activity will come to a complete standstill on 9th March 2016 as the island of Bali celebrates Nyepi Day with 24 hours of solitude. This auspicious day on the cultural calendar is actually Balinese New Year, which falls annually following the dark moon of the spring equinox. Nyepi is also known as the Day of Silence and it is a time for quiet contemplation. Typically, Balinese Hindu’s refrain from going out, cooking and turning on lights until the day passes. Out of respect for this spiritually-charged occasion, all visitors to the island must stay in the confines of their hotel and keep all noise to a minimum.
Service on Nyepi Day at Amadea Resort & Villas will more or less remain the same. Guests will still be able to relax and enjoy quality time around the pool. However, there will be some minor adjustments in the way that our food and beverages are served. Nyepi presents the perfect opportunity to think about what truly matters in life. Without lights, the night sky will be illuminated by twinkling stars and we recommend taking a few minutes to appreciate the beauty of our universe.

Ogoh-Ogoh Parade
The night before Nyepi is not to be missed as lively parades of monster effigies (ogoh-ogoh), flaming torches and traditional instruments take over the streets of Bali. Together with a small sacrificial ceremony performed in every household, these parades are believed to appease the unseen forces of the underworld. Nyepi is an opportunity to cleanse the island from impurities and disturbing elements for a fresh start to the New Year ahead.
In the months leading up to Nyepi, Balinese teenagers spent hours together in their respective community halls making ogoh-ogoh for the parade. This activity has become a popular social pastime that nurtures the creative spirit of local youngsters. Every year, these monsters, demons and mythical creatures become more elaborate. Most ogoh-ogoh’s are traditional designs that symbolize the universal struggle of good versus evil. However, some creations now take a more political stance by raising concerns about the modernization of Balinese society.
Amadea Cares Creates More Smiles
In cooperation with Yayasan Senyum Bali, Amadea Cares recently supported another two life-enhancing surgeries for Balinese children in need. The first patient was a delightful eight-month old baby girl by the name of Ni Komang Sintya Putri Pradnya Dewi who was born with a cleft lip. She was successfully operated on this January at Dharma Yadnya Hospital. Little five-month old I Nyoman Riski from Kintamani also suffered with a similar condition and his surgery took place in February. Both children are from underprivileged families who were unable to cover the costs of this essential medical care.
Since its inception back in February 2012, Amadea Cares has sponsored a total of 13 craniofacial surgeries for less fortunate members of the community. A big thank you goes out to all of our guests and staff members who have embraced this charity initiative with passion. We have been able to raise funds by encouraging every guests to donate just Rp 5,000 per person when they check out, which is the cost of a can of soft drink in Bali. Missing out on one drink today could make someone smile forever!
Employees of The Quarter
At Amadea, we believe that having happy staff members is a contributing factor to ensuring that our guests are happy during their stay. With this in mind, we conduct regular training and development sessions to empower our team and equip them with the tools necessary to serve. We also go to great lengths to identify and reward good deeds through our Employee of the Quarter initiative.
The most recent Employee of the Quarter winner is a member of concierge team, Tri Edi Wicaksono, who is affectionately known to guests as Dimitri. He is a hard worker with a passion to serve and always goes above and beyond the call of duty. Another concierge staff member, Nurul Fathur Rozi, was also acknowledged for his outstanding performance as a casual contract worker.
Lastly, the winner of the Employee of the Quarter (most recommended by guests) is Putu Budi Suryadinata. This award is presented to the staff member who has the most positive mentions in our guest comments cards. Putu Budi is one of many Amadea stars to have won this particular award several times. These are just some of the dedicated people who serve our guests on a daily basis and our congratulations go out to all of the winners.
